Physiotherapy collaboration

Most good medical care involves teamwork. We all know the importance of nurses and doctors working together as well as how crucial it is for medical specialists to collaborate, particularly with complicated cases. The value of Pelvic health physiotherapy is however often overlooked. The muscles of the pelvic girdle, the pelvic floor and the major pelvic organs – bladder, bowel, uterus and vagina – are all dynamic and work both independently and in association with one another. Most people appreciate the importance of physiotherapy to help with either pain or poor function after surgery or an injury or even after a stroke or similar calamity. Pelvic health physiotherapy is however often overlooked or considered to be nothing more than “pelvic floor exercises”.
Mairi and Shelley appreciate the crucial role of a combined approach to many Gynaecological and Urological issues. Physiotherapy can help with urinary and bowel incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic and vaginal pain. Many of these conditions need both medical and physiotherapy input. All of Mairi’s patients needing surgery of the pelvic floor also receive physiotherapy. Mairi and Shelley also meet regularly to discuss complicated cases. With this shared approach to tricky problems, we feel we provide a better service and have better outcomes than if patients were seen in isolation.
